SPOTLIGHT ON OUTREACH

Covenant to Care

Covenant to Care for Children, a nonprofit, private agency works with over 240 faith-based communities throughout Connecticut to meet the needs of abused, neglected, and impoverished children and teens. Through a network of volunteers, individual donors, and businesses, they work to foster caring and nurturing environments for children and youth.

Through the Adopt a Social Worker Program, faith-based organizations sign a covenant in which they promises to care and provide for children in a particular Social Worker’s caseload. These caring and faithful people provide those things that go above and beyond what the State can provide. WACC’s DCF social worker is Frank Fortuna. Last year, over 20,000 children in Connecticut received basic necessities through the Adopt A Social Worker program.

Many of their faith partners host mentoring groups that work with young people who are at-risk or may have a parent in prison.

With the help of faith communities and over 1,000 volunteers and donors they have served more than 500,000 children since the agency was founded in 1987.

Help Wanted

The Outreach Board is looking for a "friend of the board" to maintain their bulletin board at the church.  Time commitment is just a few hours a month and there's no need to attend our monthly board meetings.  We'd like to see the bulletin board updated on a monthly or semi-monthly basis (based on board happenings, fundraising activities, etc.)  We're very flexible!!  Please contact Sue Budde if you can help out.

Avon Ecumenical Ministry to Foster Care/Adoptive Families

There are 6,000 children in Connecticut's Department of Children and Families waiting for families to give them homes.  Families might be willing to take a foster child if they knew there was a support system in their community.

Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. there will be a time of prayer at the West  Avon Congregational Church for this new ministry.  Information will be available along with a short DVD presentation.  This is a special way to spend time in prayer on the National Day of Prayer.

Save the Date!

Christian Activities Council Annual Awards Dinner will be on Thursday, May 22 at the Bond Hotel Ballroom.  The keynote speaker will be Rev. Davita D. McAllister, Assoc. Conference Minister for Youth and Young Adult Ministries. The topic will be "Empowering our Youth."  There will be outstanding music, good food, and an exciting silent auction.

Reminder: The third Sunday of each month is Food Basket Sunday.  Donations of non-perishable food for Gifts of Love may be brought to worship and placed on the communion table in lieu of flowers.
